A Journey Into the Land, the People, and What They Produce

What if we explored Portugal not simply by where we went, but by what grows there?

That’s the idea we’re dreaming about.

Rooted & Cultivated: Portugal would be an exploration of the relationship between land, climate, tradition, agriculture, food, and the people who have spent generations learning how to work with all of them.

Portugal offers an extraordinary canvas.

We might begin among the vineyards of the Douro Valley, where steep terraces carved into the hillsides tell a story almost as compelling as the wines themselves. From there, we could explore another wine region entirely—perhaps the Alentejo, where the landscape, grapes, traditions, and rhythms of life feel remarkably different.

But wine would only be part of the story.

We imagine walking beneath cork oaks and discovering why Portugal produces so much of the world’s cork—and why harvesting a tree without cutting it down requires knowledge passed from one generation to another.

We could meet the people raising the distinctive Alentejano black pig, explore olive groves and mills, sit around tables with farmers and winemakers, and discover how Portugal’s agricultural traditions are adapting to changing markets, technology, climate, and consumer expectations.

And somewhere along the way, there should be a long lunch.

Probably several.

Because understanding agriculture isn’t only about what happens in the field. It’s about what eventually arrives on the table—and the people gathered around it.

Beyond Agritourism

This isn’t envisioned as a farm tour.

We want to go deeper.

Who grows the food?

Why here?

What makes this particular landscape suited to grapes, olives, cork, livestock, or something else entirely?

How have generations of farmers adapted to the land?

What happens when centuries-old agricultural traditions meet modern science and technology?

And perhaps most importantly:

What can the people who cultivate a place teach us about that place?

Those questions could lead us into vineyards, farms, research centers, kitchens, markets, wineries, forests, villages, and conversations we haven’t even imagined yet.

Who Might Love This Journey?

You wouldn’t need to be a farmer.

You’d simply need to be curious.

This could become a fascinating journey for people interested in food and wine, agriculture, sustainability, science, history, culture, entrepreneurship—or anyone who has ever wondered why something tastes different when you experience it where it actually comes from.

It could also become something more specialized: an executive journey, an agricultural leadership experience, a university or alumni program, or a gathering of people from across the food and agricultural industries.

We don’t know yet.

That’s part of the fun.

Where This Dream Could Lead

Portugal may only be the beginning.

The larger idea we’re exploring is a potential Rooted & Cultivated Collection—journeys that discover places through agriculture and the people who cultivate them.

Germany through hops, barley, brewing traditions, and the Reinheitsgebot.

Israel through agricultural innovation, water management, desert farming, and technology.

Missouri through farms, vineyards, livestock, agricultural research, food production, and the people shaping the future of American agriculture.

Other destinations will undoubtedly reveal themselves.

For now, we’re simply following our curiosity.

This Journey Is Still a Dream

There are no dates.

There is no finished itinerary.

And there is definitely no brochure.

Rooted & Cultivated: Portugal is currently living where many Epic Explorations begin—as an idea we’re excited enough about to start asking questions.

We’re talking with people.

Making connections.

Following possibilities.

And wondering what might happen if we experience Portugal from the ground up.

What are we dreaming about?

This.

And we can’t wait to see where it grows.
