What if a journey through Wyoming began with a gathering?
What would happen if we gave Wyoming enough time to introduce itself?
There is the Wyoming you can see from a highway: immense skies, mountain silhouettes, and stretches of road that seem to run straight into the horizon. Then there is the Wyoming you meet when you pull up a chair, listen to someone’s story, and discover why they chose to build a life in a place that asks something of them.
Rendezvous with Wyoming is an idea for a small group journey into both worlds. We’re dreaming about wide open country, certainly, but also ranch families, working hands, local tables, and the people whose lives give the landscape its meaning.
What might a rendezvous look like?
Perhaps we begin in a town where the West feels lived in, rather than staged. We might meet a rancher who can tell us what it takes to care for land and livestock through a Wyoming winter. We could sit with a maker whose craft has been shaped by the materials and traditions around them. A historian or local storyteller might help us see a familiar landmark through a very different lens.
Some days would belong to the outdoors. There might be a quiet morning in the mountains, a drive across high plains that makes everyone put down their phones, or an evening spent watching the light change over a landscape that has looked much the same for generations. If the right opportunity presents itself, we might join a local gathering, visit a working ranch, or share a meal prepared by someone who knows exactly where its ingredients came from.
We’re also curious about the many stories that meet in Wyoming. Indigenous histories, migration, conservation, ranching, art, and the realities of life in a changing West all deserve more than a passing mention. The right journey would make room for people with firsthand knowledge to speak for themselves. We would come ready to listen and willing to have some of our assumptions challenged.
A journey shaped by people
The word rendezvous suggests a meeting. That is what makes this idea exciting to us.
A meeting with a place can happen at a scenic overlook. A meeting with Wyoming’s people takes a little more time. It may happen over coffee before the day’s work begins, beside a fence that needs mending, in an artist’s studio, or around a dinner table after the conversation has wandered far beyond the meal.
That is the kind of access we hope to build into Rendezvous with Wyoming. We want our guests to leave with memories of the scenery and the names and voices of people they met along the way. The strongest moments may be the ones nobody could have scheduled down to the minute: an unexpected invitation, a story told on the drive back, or the group lingering because no one is ready for the evening to end.
Who might come along?
This idea is for travelers who are curious about the American West and want to get closer than a photograph allows. You don’t need to ride a horse, know your way around a ranch, or arrive with a particular picture of Wyoming in mind. You do need to enjoy meeting people, asking questions, and letting a place reveal itself at its own pace.
It could become a hosted journey for a group of friends. It might suit a club or organization interested in Western culture, food, art, or the relationship between people and land. The route, season, and experiences would grow from the people who want to make the journey together.
We’re still dreaming. The conversations that would give this experience its shape are ahead of us, and that is part of the invitation.
