John Minott

Managing Director of Jamaica Standard Products

Coffee Grower, Producer & Keeper of a Jamaican Legacy

Trusted Member of the Epic Explorations Circle of Trust

John O. Minott is part of our Circle of Trust because our relationship reaches back to my earliest days in the travel industry. John and his late father, John O. “Jackie” Minott Sr., welcomed me into their world—hosting me at Baronhall Estate, walking me through their production facilities, and introducing me to a Jamaica defined by its people, agriculture, communities, and stories. Their hospitality helped cement my love for Jamaica, and John continues that legacy today.

Meet John

John O. Minott is the Managing Director of Jamaica Standard Products, one of Jamaica’s oldest and most respected coffee companies. Founded by John’s grandfather, Leslie O. Minott, in 1942, Jamaica Standard Products has remained family-owned and operated for more than 80 years.

John represents the third generation of the Minott family to guide the company. After graduating from Florida International University, he joined Jamaica Standard Products in 1991 and began learning the business directly from his father, affectionately known as Jackie. That education went far beyond boardrooms and financial statements. It included the land, the farmers, the coffee plants, the production process, the people who make the company possible, and the responsibility that comes with carrying a family legacy forward.

Today, Jamaica Standard Products grows, processes, roasts, packages, and exports several distinguished Jamaican coffee brands, including Island Blue® Jamaica Blue Mountain® Coffee, Jamaica High Mountain Coffee, Island Brew®, and Baronhall Estate® Jamaican Gourmet Coffee. The company also produces coffee liqueur, sauces, spices, and other distinctly Jamaican products.

At the heart of the company’s agricultural story is Baronhall Estate, a substantial coffee property in Jamaica’s interior. It was there, during one of my first journeys to Jamaica, that John and his father gave me an entirely different way of experiencing the island. They showed me that Jamaican coffee is not simply something poured into a cup. It is the culmination of elevation, soil, weather, patience, agricultural knowledge, careful processing, and the work of many people.

That visit changed how I saw Jamaica.

John’s leadership honors the foundation created by his grandfather and strengthened by his father while continuing to move the business forward. Jamaica Standard Products has endured hurricanes, crop diseases, changing markets, and the severe disruption caused by the pandemic. Through it all, the company has remained committed to Jamaican agriculture, its employees, its farmers, and the quality of the products bearing its name.

Our guests should experience Jamaican coffee as a living story rather than merely a beverage. They should see where it grows, meet some of the people whose livelihoods are connected to it, understand how the beans move from the hillsides to the roastery, and taste the differences between Jamaica Blue Mountain and Jamaica High Mountain coffee. Most importantly, they should leave with a deeper appreciation for the people, families, and communities behind every cup.

What John Brings to an Epic Explorations Journey

John brings generations of firsthand knowledge about Jamaican coffee, agriculture, entrepreneurship, and family enterprise. He understands the complete journey of coffee—from selecting and cultivating plants to harvesting, processing, roasting, packaging, and introducing the finished product to consumers around the world.

He also brings something that cannot be acquired through research alone: a deeply rooted understanding of Jamaica.

Through John, coffee becomes a doorway into larger conversations about land, climate, resilience, family responsibility, rural employment, international trade, and the future of Jamaican farming. His perspective helps our guests understand that a celebrated product such as Jamaican coffee does not exist independently of the people and communities that produce it.

Jamaica Standard Products also supports the continuing development of the island’s coffee industry. This includes participating in efforts to identify stronger, more productive, and more disease-resistant coffee plants—work that can help local farmers protect their crops, improve yields, and build greater resilience against agricultural threats.

John can help us move beyond the familiar resort image of Jamaica and into a more nuanced story—one involving farmers, researchers, production teams, family businesses, entrepreneurs, and communities working to preserve what is distinctly Jamaican while preparing for what comes next.

Why John Is Part of the Circle of Trust

A Circle of Trust is built over time.

It is built through hospitality freely given, promises honored, doors opened, and relationships that continue long after a first visit has ended. My relationship with the Minott family began when I was still finding my way in the travel industry. John and his father did more than show me a successful coffee company. They trusted me with their story and allowed me to see Jamaica through their eyes.

Jackie had a genuine passion for community tourism. He understood that travelers should encounter more than Jamaica’s scenery. They should meet its people, hear their stories, experience their communities, and recognize the ingenuity and generosity found throughout the island.

We all miss him.

His influence, however, remains present—in the company he helped build, in the relationships he nurtured, and in the leadership John continues to provide. John belongs in our Circle of Trust because he carries that legacy with integrity while continuing to look toward the future of Jamaica’s coffee industry and its farming communities.

John’s Perspective

Jamaican coffee carries the story of the island within it. Its quality begins with the land, but it depends upon the knowledge, patience, and determination of the people who cultivate and produce it. Preserving that legacy requires honoring tradition while continuing to innovate, strengthen coffee plants, support farmers, and prepare the industry for future challenges.

For John, leading Jamaica Standard Products is not simply about protecting a family business. It is about carrying forward more than eight decades of relationships, responsibility, and belief in what Jamaica can produce and share with the world.

I first met John and his father when I was beginning my own journey in the travel industry. On one of my first trips to Jamaica, they hosted me at Baronhall Estate and later showed me through the Jamaica Standard Products production facilities.

I can still remember what that experience did to me.

They did not simply show me coffee plants, machinery, and packaged products. They helped me understand the connection between the land, the product, and the people. They showed me a Jamaica that was industrious, generous, complicated, creative, and intensely proud of what it could produce.

My love for Jamaica and its people was cemented through experiences like that one.

Jackie’s passion for community tourism especially resonated with me. He believed in introducing visitors to the real Jamaica—to its communities, farmers, entrepreneurs, and everyday people. That philosophy has remained with me and continues to influence how we think about travel at Epic Explorations.

Today, John carries forward the work begun by his grandfather and shaped by his father. He respects the history, but he is not trapped by it. He understands that protecting Jamaica’s coffee legacy also means investing in research, responding to disease and climate challenges, helping farmers produce healthier crops, and finding new ways to share Jamaican products with the world.

And yes, Jamaica Standard Products produces some of the finest Blue Mountain and High Mountain coffee I have ever tasted. Their coffee also finds its way into some very fine coffee liqueurs. But the reason John belongs in our Circle of Trust goes beyond the quality of what the company produces.

It comes down to people, relationships, and a shared belief that the most meaningful journeys are built around stories worth hearing.
