Trusted Member of the Epic Explorations Circle of Trust
Gonçalo Bettencourt understands that exceptional travel through Portugal is not defined simply by beautiful hotels, private transportation, or reservations at celebrated restaurants. It is defined by access, relationships, and the feeling of being welcomed into a place rather than merely passing through it. We have trusted Gonçalo and Van Zeller & Son with several of our most discerning clients, and they have consistently delivered the personal attention, thoughtful planning, and exceptional service those travelers expected.
Meet Gonçalo Bettencourt
Gonçalo Bettencourt represents a fascinating intersection of Portuguese heritage, international perspective, aesthetic sensibility, and deeply personal hospitality.
The Van Zeller family’s relationship with Portugal stretches back to the early 18th century, when Arnaldo João van Zeller left Rotterdam and settled in Porto. In the centuries since, the family name has become closely intertwined with Portugal’s wine traditions and particularly with the history of Port and the Douro Valley. Today, the family is recognized as one of the country’s important names in wine, carrying forward generations of experience and connection to the land.
That heritage gives Gonçalo something that cannot be acquired through guidebooks or conventional tourism training: an inherited understanding of Portuguese life, relationships, traditions, and hospitality.
Born in Portugal and educated internationally, Gonçalo also brings a background connected to art and design and a lifelong appreciation for aesthetics. Together with his mother, Teresa van Zeller—the 14th generation of the family’s winemaking branch—he brings the family’s heritage, creativity, and instinct for welcoming others into the work of Van Zeller & Son.
Based in Porto, Van Zeller & Son is a boutique destination management company specializing in bespoke journeys for individuals, families, small groups, and select corporate travelers. Rather than offering standardized itineraries, the company creates highly personalized experiences shaped around each guest’s interests, pace, and reason for traveling.
Its extensive network of relationships can open doors to private wine estates, historic properties, family traditions, distinctive restaurants, meaningful cultural encounters, and experiences that are often beyond the reach of the ordinary visitor.
Guests traveling with the guidance of Gonçalo and Van Zeller & Son should feel less like tourists following an itinerary and more like personal guests being introduced to Portugal by someone who genuinely knows and loves it. They should experience gracious service, thoughtful pacing, beautiful surroundings, and access to people and places that reveal the country’s character—from Porto and the Douro Valley to Portugal’s villages, estates, cities, coastlines, culinary traditions, and creative communities.
What Gonçalo Brings to an Epic Explorations Journey
Gonçalo brings a rare combination of family heritage, cultural access, aesthetic awareness, local knowledge, and highly personalized service.
His family’s centuries-long involvement in Portuguese wine provides a natural connection to the vineyards, estates, families, and traditions that have shaped the Douro Valley and Portugal’s broader wine culture. But his perspective extends well beyond wine. His interests in art, architecture, design, food, history, and the Portuguese way of life allow him to see how the country’s many stories can be woven into one cohesive journey.
Through Van Zeller & Son, Gonçalo can help transform an itinerary into a carefully considered progression of experiences. He understands the importance of the small details: where a guest is welcomed, who introduces a place, how an experience unfolds, and whether there is enough space to absorb what has just happened.
That attention is especially valuable to Epic Explorations. We are not interested in showing guests Portugal as a collection of attractions. We want them to encounter its people, traditions, flavors, landscapes, and living stories. Gonçalo understands that distinction.

Why Gonçalo Is Part of the Circle of Trust
A place in the Epic Explorations Circle of Trust is earned through experience, shared values, and demonstrated care for the people we entrust to someone.
We have worked with Gonçalo and Van Zeller & Son on several occasions, particularly for clients seeking an elevated level of personal service in Portugal. These were travelers for whom details mattered and generic solutions would not have been enough. Gonçalo and his team understood the assignment, cared for our clients, and delivered experiences appropriate to their expectations.
Just as importantly, their philosophy complements our own. Van Zeller & Son believes that travelers should be treated as family guests rather than tourists. Epic Explorations believes the most memorable journeys begin with people who are willing to share their world. Those ideas naturally belong together.
Gonçalo is part of our Circle of Trust because he helps us move beyond simply arranging Portugal and toward genuinely revealing it.
Gonçalo’s Perspective
Gonçalo’s approach is grounded in the belief that true luxury is found in simplicity, excellence of service, and meaningful access. It is not merely about traveling privately or staying in impressive places. It is about being received personally, seeing Portugal through the eyes of those who live there, and experiencing family customs, traditions, flavors, and relationships that give the country its distinctive character.
In the Van Zeller way, the traveler is not treated as an observer standing outside Portuguese life. The traveler is welcomed into it.
What I appreciate about Gonçalo is that he understands the difference between expensive travel and exceptional travel.
Exceptional travel does not need to announce itself. You recognize it in the ease of the experience, the warmth of the welcome, the thought behind every introduction, and the sense that someone anticipated what you might need before you asked. Gonçalo and Van Zeller & Son understand that kind of service.
I also appreciate the depth behind what they create. The Van Zeller name carries centuries of history in Portugal, particularly within the country’s wine traditions. Gonçalo combines that inheritance with an international outlook and a creative eye shaped by art and design. The result is a perspective that feels both deeply Portuguese and refreshingly original.
We have trusted Gonçalo with some of our top clients, and that experience matters to me. Our Circle of Trust is not a directory of businesses we have discovered online. It is a community of people whose character, knowledge, relationships, and care allow us to create journeys with confidence.
When Gonçalo helps us open Portugal to our guests, I know they are not simply being handed an itinerary. They are being welcomed into a country he considers home.
Experience Portugal Through the People Who Know It Best
Gonçalo helps Epic Explorations reveal Portugal through the family traditions, trusted relationships, private places, and generous hospitality that allow our guests to experience the country not simply as visitors, but as welcomed guests.
