A Private Island With a Bigger Story to Find

On Our Radar

Just offshore from St. John sits a small private island that immediately raises a larger question:

Could Lovango Resort & Beach Club become the starting point for an Epic Exploration of the U.S. Virgin Islands?

We do not have the answer yet. We do not have an itinerary, a central theme, or even a clear sense of whether Lovango would become the journey’s home base, one memorable chapter, or simply the place that leads us toward a more interesting discovery.

But there is something here—and that is exactly why Lovango belongs On Our Radar.

What Caught Our Attention

Lovango Resort & Beach Club occupies its own island in the U.S. Virgin Islands, approximately ten minutes by resort ferry from both St. John and St. Thomas. It combines the intimacy of a private-island retreat with access to two distinctly different Caribbean destinations.

The accommodations are part of the attraction. Lovango offers villas, luxury treehouses, and elevated glamping tents rather than relying upon a conventional collection of hotel rooms. There are hiking trails, coral reefs, snorkeling, secluded Crescent Beach, waterfront dining, and views stretching across the surrounding islands. The experience appears able to move between peaceful seclusion and a more social Caribbean energy without becoming completely isolated from the world around it.

That combination caught our attention.

What We Do Not Know Yet

A beautiful boutique hotel—even one occupying its own Caribbean island—is not by itself an Epic Explorations Journey.

The unanswered question is what story surrounds it.

Is Lovango the beginning of a journey exploring the relationships among St. John, St. Thomas, and the smaller islands scattered between them? Could it open a conversation about the people who have lived from these waters, protected these landscapes, and shaped the modern Virgin Islands?

Might it become the quiet home base from which we meet local historians, conservationists, sailors, craftspeople, cooks, musicians, and longtime island residents?

Could a journey move beyond the familiar Caribbean postcard to explore what island life actually means—its beauty, vulnerability, independence, environmental pressures, and connection to the sea?

Or is Lovango itself simply an extraordinary place to slow down for a few days while we follow an entirely different thread?

We do not know yet.

The Possibilities We Are Watching

Lovango offers several intriguing fragments that might eventually become part of something larger:

A private-island setting that remains closely connected to St. John and St. Thomas
Unconventional accommodations, including treehouses, villas, and glamping
Hiking and snorkeling experiences that connect guests with the natural environment
The possibility of exploring the reefs and smaller cays by boat
Access to the history, communities, and protected landscapes of St. John
A contrast between the energy of St. Thomas and the quieter character of St. John
Waterfront meals and evenings that could create space for conversation and storytelling
The chance to investigate how tourism, conservation, and island life coexist

Any one of these could become meaningful. None has yet revealed itself as the defining thread.

Why Lovango Remains on Our Radar

Lovango feels like one of those places that may make considerably more sense after we have stood on the dock, walked the trails, talked with the people, crossed the surrounding water, and begun asking better questions.

Perhaps the resort becomes the centerpiece. Perhaps it becomes the gateway. Perhaps it introduces us to a person or story we cannot yet see from Kansas City.

That uncertainty is not a weakness. It is the purpose of On Our Radar.

This is where we keep the places, people, properties, and experiences that have captured our curiosity before they have become complete journey ideas. Lovango has given us enough to pay attention—but not yet enough to say we understand what an Epic Exploration here should become.

For now, we are watching, listening, and waiting for the missing thread.
