Jamaica Beyond the Resort: A Community-Based Journey is an intimate exploration of Montego Bay and the surrounding countryside, designed for travelers who want to listen, participate, and form genuine connections rather than pass through.

This journey would begin with a comfortable home base at a locally owned Jamaican hotel or resort in the Montego Bay area. Our selected property would offer authentic Jamaican hospitality, comfortable accommodations, and a welcoming place to relax while keeping us connected to the communities and landscapes we have come to experience. There will still be time for the beach, but this journey is about discovering what lies beyond it.

A central experience would be a visit to the Rastafari Indigenous Village, where community members introduce us to Rastafari history, spirituality, music, food, herbal traditions, and a way of life grounded in respect for nature. This is not intended as a staged performance. It is an opportunity to enter another community as guests, ask thoughtful questions, share a meal, and better understand a movement that has shaped Jamaica’s identity while often being misunderstood beyond the island.

At Ahhh…Ras Natango Gallery and Garden, we would meet the family and artists behind a remarkable hillside sanctuary. Tropical plants, sweeping views, Jamaican art, and personal storytelling come together here. Rather than treating the garden as another attraction to check off a list, we would spend time learning how creativity, conservation, and community can grow together. Whenever possible, travelers can purchase art and handcrafted goods directly from the people who created them.

Food offers another doorway into Jamaican life. We envision a hands-on jerk cooking experience led by local cooks who can explain the role of pimento, Scotch bonnet peppers, thyme, scallions, smoke, and patience. A visit to a neighborhood market or roadside stand could introduce us to breadfruit, callaloo, ackee, tropical fruit, and the everyday conversations that surround food. The experience would culminate not merely in a meal, but in a deeper appreciation of the history and ingenuity carried through Jamaican kitchens.

Nature would have an important voice in Jamaica Beyond the Resort: A Community-Based Journey. We may drift down the Martha Brae River with a Jamaican raft captain, hearing stories of the land as bamboo carries us through the green interior. After dark, the waters of the Luminous Lagoon reveal another Jamaica as microscopic organisms create an otherworldly glow. These experiences invite wonder while reminding us that fragile places deserve thoughtful stewardship.

The journey would confront Jamaica’s colonial history where it unfolded. In downtown Montego Bay, we would visit Sam Sharpe Square and the small structure known as the Cage, once used to confine recaptured freedom-seekers—people colonial authorities called “runaways.”

Here we would follow Samuel Sharpe, an enslaved Baptist deacon who helped organize the 1831 Christmas Rebellion, or Baptist War. What began as a strike for freedom and wages became the largest uprising by enslaved people in the British Caribbean. Sharpe was executed in Montego Bay in 1832, but the rebellion and brutal colonial response helped accelerate the movement toward abolition.

Visits to selected great houses—potentially Greenwood, Rose Hall, or Cinnamon Hill—would then look beyondبوك architecture and folklore to examine the plantation economy, resistance, emancipation, and the people whose labor created wealth for others. Local historians and guides would connect the grandeur of the lobster estates tocisivelyiëntnub those who challenged the system, ensuring romantic legends never eclipse human truth.

A community-based journey must also create meaningful local benefit. We would prioritize Jamaican guides, drivers, cooks, artists, farmers, musicians, accommodations, and independent businesses. We would choose any school, nonprofit, or community initiative included in the final itinerary with local partners, based on what the community identifies as useful—not what makes visitors feel charitable. Guests might share skills, support a locally led project, or contribute needed resources, but relationship and dignity would come before voluntourism.

There would also be unhurried time: an afternoon by the sea, a walk through Montego Bay, music shared in a small venue, or a conversation that becomes the memory you carry home because the most resonant moments cannot always be scheduled.

This is the Jamaica we are dreaming about: joyful and complicated, rooted and creative, naturally beautiful and deeply human. It is a journey designed not simply to show us Jamaica, but to help us meet Jamaicans—and to leave with a richer understanding of the island than any resort alone could offer.

Colombia — The Country Beyond the Headlines

What if everything you thought you knew about Colombia was only part of the story?

For decades, much of the outside world’s understanding of Colombia has been shaped by headlines. Cartels. Cocaine. Pablo Escobar. Guerrillas. Political violence. A decades-long conflict that became the storyline through which an extraordinarily complex country was often viewed.

Those stories are part of Colombia’s history. But they are not Colombia’s whole story.

Colombia Beyond the Headlines is an Epic Exploration designed around a simple idea: sometimes the most interesting places are those we think we already understand.

This journey isn’t about ignoring Colombia’s difficult past—quite the opposite. We want to understand it, talk about it, meet people who lived through it, and explore how Colombians have transformed communities once defined by violence into places filled with creativity, entrepreneurship, art, hospitality, and hope.

But that is only where the conversation begins.

Colombia stretches from the Caribbean to the Pacific, across three great branches of the Andes and into the Amazon basin. The country’s official tourism organization describes six distinct tourism regions, from Caribbean beaches and Pacific rainforest to Andean cities and the Amazon jungle.

This is a country that deserves to be explored, not explained.

Cartagena: Where Worlds Collided

Our story could begin on Colombia’s Caribbean coast in Cartagena de Indias, where massive stone fortifications, colonial architecture, narrow streets, plazas, balconies, music, and Caribbean flavors reveal centuries of competing cultures and ambitions.

Cartagena’s port, fortresses, and historic monuments are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site—one of nine UNESCO World Heritage properties currently inscribed in Colombia.

But an Epic Exploration should go deeper than admiring beautiful buildings.

Who built Cartagena? Why was this port so important? How did Spanish colonialism, the transatlantic slave trade, piracy, religion, commerce, African traditions, and Caribbean culture collide here?

The city becomes our first classroom—not through lectures alone, but through conversations, food, music, neighborhoods, architecture, and the people who carry those stories forward.

Medellín: Transformation Is Complicated

Then there is Medellín.

For many Americans, hearing the city’s name immediately brings to mind Pablo Escobar and the Medellín Cartel.

That’s exactly why we should go.

Not to glorify Escobar.

Not to pretend he never existed.

But to ask a much more interesting question:

What happens to a city after the cameras leave?

Modern Medellín has become known for urban transformation, public spaces, transportation, art, entrepreneurship, and innovation. Colombia’s official tourism organization describes it as one of South America’s most dynamic urban centers, surrounded by the mountains and culture of the Western Colombian Andes.

We would explore both realities—the painful history and the remarkable transformation that followed it.

That could mean walking neighborhoods once considered inaccessible, meeting residents and community leaders, understanding how transportation and public investment changed isolated communities, experiencing street art as storytelling, and hearing Colombians explain their city in their own words.

Because Colombia Beyond the Headlines shouldn’t tell Colombians what their story means.

We should listen to them tell us.

Into Colombia’s Coffee Country

Leaving the city behind, the landscape changes dramatically.

Mountain roads wind through brilliant green valleys. Coffee plants climb seemingly impossible hillsides. Colorful villages appear between forests and farms.

This is Colombia’s Coffee Cultural Landscape, spanning Caldas, Quindío, Risaralda, and Valle del Cauca. UNESCO describes it as an exceptional cultural landscape shaped by generations of small-scale coffee farmers adapting agriculture to difficult mountainous terrain.

Here coffee stops being something poured into a cup.

It becomes agriculture, economics, geography, family, tradition, and identity.

We could stay on a working coffee estate, walk the fields with growers, learn how elevation and microclimates affect coffee, follow beans from plant to harvest to processing and roasting, and finally sit down with the people who produce something most of us consume every morning without ever considering where it came from.

And somewhere along the way, we should find ourselves beneath the towering wax palms of the Cocora Valley, where Colombia’s national tree rises dramatically from the Andean landscape. Colombia’s tourism organization highlights Cocora as a signature experience of the Coffee Cultural Landscape.

A Country of Extraordinary Contrasts

Depending on how deeply we want to explore, Colombia gives us almost too many directions to follow.

We could travel farther into the Caribbean toward Santa Marta and the Sierra Nevada.

We could explore archaeological mysteries at San Agustín.

We could discover the Amazon’s biodiversity.

We could follow Colombia’s Pacific coast, where rainforest meets ocean and Afro-Colombian culture has created distinctive traditions of food and music.

We could explore Bogotá through art, politics, cuisine, history, and the Gold Museum’s extraordinary collections.

Or perhaps we leave some of those stories unexplored.

Because the goal isn’t to “do Colombia.”

It’s to begin understanding it.

The Journey Behind the Journey

Colombia Beyond the Headlines is ultimately about something larger than Colombia.

It’s about perception.

How much of what we believe about another country comes from personal experience—and how much comes from news reports, movies, television, politics, stereotypes, and stories repeated so many times that they become accepted as the entire truth?

Colombia allows us to challenge that.

We won’t erase its history. We’ll confront it.

We won’t pretend complicated issues are simple. We’ll ask better questions.

We’ll eat with people. Walk their neighborhoods. Visit their farms. Listen to their music. Hear their stories. Explore their landscapes.

And somewhere between Cartagena’s ancient walls, Medellín’s transformed neighborhoods, and a cup of coffee overlooking the green mountains of the Andes, we may discover something unexpected.

The Colombia we thought we knew never really existed.

Another country has always existed beyond the headlines.

We just needed to go looking for it.
